Nausea - Summary - Jean Paul Sartre

Antoine Roquentin, a historian living in Bouville, France, started a diary that helped him explain his strange and depressing feelings. Which had been the cause of his annoyance for the last few days. He can't figure out what his wrong is, and he's not sure if he should keep a diary.

He claims that a kind of mental illness or "mental stress" has begun to take hold in his brain and body, although he does not know from where it came. It's not like he's been eating bad shellfish lately. To alleviate this stress, he was working on about ‘simple sexual act’ and a personal historical project.

He was noting everything in his diary, maybe holding a stone or looking at a glass of beer or touching a wet paper in the street. He was noting everything in his diary. In return he was feeling an annoying and irresistible feeling.

For the past 10 years he has been researching the Marquis de Rolebon. Mr. Rollebon was a French nobleman who lived in Bouville. Rouquetin was therefore forced to come to Bowville. Because he has to finish this research and write a book. Whenever he looks in the mirror, he doesn't understand whether he is looking at his own face or Rolebon's. He was losing interest in his work. It seemed to him that he would never finish his work; he was being hindered by the past more than the present. His existence has something to do with this uncomfortable feeling. He realizes he is using his past and Rollebon in general, in support of his own existence. He angrily claims his own existence, because everything around him is claiming their own existence. When he looks at all the objects around him, he discovers, "existence precedes essence."

He looked at the roots of the chestnut tree and realized its essence. Every time he looked at the essence of each object, he had a conflict with the existence of each object, and that was the cause of his illness.

Antoine Roquentin began to feel sick from time to time, and sometimes he felt healthy. He would occasionally write letters to his ex-girlfriend Anny, but could not write much, and old memories would move him. Rouquetin met his ex-girlfriend in France. He hoped they would get back to their relationship, but he noticed they couldn't talk anymore. His girlfriend is no longer the same as before. He told his girlfriend Anny about his illness, but she didn't understand. Knowing that they would never see each other again, they parted from each other. He came back to Bowville, forgetting his past and trying to grasp the present.

He would occasionally go to the library with a self-taught man named Ogier P. He noticed that his companion was reading the books in the library in alphabetical order. Antoine is sure that this man will finish reading all the books in the library. Antoine looked at him with respect. One day while Antoine was working at the library, and Ogier P was reading his new book, he noticed two other little boys sitting next to them. And Ogier P was caressing one of their feet. The woman sitting next to him also noticed. Ogier P was kicked out of the library.

He returned to her favorite old cafe, asking to play his favorite records so that he could forget his sadness and mental illness. His life seemed to be full of emptiness. He quit his job and returned to Paris to re-engage in novel writing.
